About us

The National Archives Image Library is the picture library of The National Archives of England and Wales. We are a non-ministerial department, and the official archive and publisher for the UK Government, and for England and Wales. We are the guardians of over 1,000 years of iconic national documents.

We are expert advisers in information and records management and are a cultural, academic and heritage institution. We fulfil a leadership role for the archive sector and work to secure the future of physical and digital records.

Images from our collection are reproduced in many forms, including books and other publications, broadcast media and online. Our Image Library acts to facilitate the use of these images for commercial reproduction. You can find out more information about our services in the FAQs section of this site and Price List.

There are approximately 80,000 unique images on the website, and we add to the archive regularly. If you cannot find an image related to your project, please do email us at image-library@nationalarchives.gov.uk
