Letter from Earl of Bellomont luring Kidd to New York

Date: 8 June 1698 Reference: HCA 1/98 pt1 f128 Creator: High Court of Admiralty and colonial Vice-Admiralty courts Catalogue context: Papers relating to Captain Samuel Burgess, employed by Frederick Philipse, merchant in New York, to carry goods to and procure slaves from Madagascar, who in 1699 took on board over 20 passengers eventually denounced by him as pirates. There are also letters addressed to William Kidd luring him to New York with a promise of protection from the new Governor there, Lord Bellomont, who had hitherto helped to sponsor his career as an exterminator of pirates: Kidd landed at Boston, 1 June 1699, was arrested on Bellomont's orders, sent to England and hanged for piracy in 1701.
