Montagu Bernard SHAPIRO, alias Monte, Monty: British, South African. SHAPIRO first came to notice in 1937 in close touch with known communists and in 1938 was secretary of the communist-sponsored British Youth Peace Assembly. In 1940 he was reported to be using his position as an air-raid warden to organize a Tenants' Defence League and was kept under observation while serving in the RAF. Reported missing in action in 1943, he was a prisoner of war in Germany until he was repatriated in 1944. After the war he was active as a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, on the committee of his local branch, and a member of its Psychologists' Group and of the Association of Scientific Workers. He resigned from the Party in 1956
