'Hyderabad City, capital of the Nizam's Dominions, lies on the right bank of the river Musi, with Golconda to the west and the residency and its bazaars and the British cantonment of Secunderabad to the north-east. The city, in shape a parallelogram with an area of over two square miles, was founded in 1589 by Mahommed Kuli, the fifth of the Kutb Shahi Kings.
