Photograph of front port view of one of the two RE8 prototypes, 7996 or 7997 [Reconnaissance Experimental]. RE8 was designed to replace the BE2c and BE2e [Blériot Experimentals] in the Corps Reconnaissance squadrons of the RFC, its advantage being that the crew positions were reversed and that it had the more powerful RAF4a engine. These prototypes flew on 17 June and 5 July 1916.
