Transcriptions and quotations from written documents held at The National Archives may be published, displayed or broadcast without charge.
Supply fee
Our image library supplies high resolution digital images at £38.75 per image.
UK customers will be charged VAT on supply fees.
No further fee is payable for the purchase of a high resolution image if required for personal use, research or study.
Reproduction fee
In addition to the supply fee, reproduction fees are payable for commercial use and direct reproduction of our images, including publication, display and broadcast in various media.
UK customers will be charged VAT on reproduction fees.
Reproduction fees vary depending on how the images will be used. When you place images in your basket, you will be asked a series of questions about your intended usage. The total fee is then automatically calculated and any discounts taken into account (see below) before you purchase.
Discounts on reproduction fees
If you buy four or more images for reproduction, a discount will be applied to the reproduction fees as follows:
| 4 to 5 images | 10% discount |
| 6 to 7 images | 20% discount |
| 8 to 10 images | 30% discount |
| 11 to 14 images | 40% discount |
| 15 + images | 50% discount |
Electronic rights
Electronic rights are automatically included with fees for print. For example, the prices for book publishing include e-book rights. If you require electronic rights only, select 'internet use'.
Non-commercial use
Reproduction fees are usually waived for material used on password-protected non-commercial educational websites. Contact the image library for more details.
Product and brand licensing
If you want to license our images for use on products such as gifts, clothing, accessories, stationery and toys or for use in digital products such as apps, CDs or DVDs, please email: associates@nationalarchives.gov.uk
Open website
A reproduction fee of £40.00 applies for the rights to upload images from The National Archives onto an open website, in perpetuity. For this single payment, between one and twenty document images may be uploaded to a website. The National Archives Image Library does not require details of which images are to be selected, or when they are to be uploaded. Search for 'Internet Publication' and select 'Flat fee only' as the license option.
